ASCO issued a statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court decision on affirmative action on June 29. A statement from ASCO Chief Executive Officer, Clifford A. Hudis, MD, FASCO, FACP, follows:

“[The] U.S. Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action threatens to reverse hard-won gains in diversity across medicine, including oncology.  The country needs a pipeline of diverse oncology professionals to reach all patients, help eliminate significant health disparities, and enable all of us to achieve optimal health outcomes. ASCO will continue advocating for an oncology workforce that reflects the lives and experiences of those in treatment, and our commitment is stronger than ever.”

The following day, ASCO issued a statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court ruling involving equal treatment for the LGBTQ+ community. A statement from Dr. Hudis follows:

“ASCO is deeply concerned that [the] U.S. Supreme Court ruling could weaken antidiscrimination protections across society, exacerbate existing cancer health disparities, and worsen barriers to care for sexual and gender minorities.  ASCO has long pushed for sexual and gender minority rights and is steadfast in its commitment to protecting equal access to high-quality cancer care for all Americans, promoting safe and inclusive workplaces for our LGBTQ+ members and ensuring LGBTQ+ representation across the cancer continuum.”
