Physicians gathered at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) elected Barbara McAneny, MD, FASCO, MACP, an oncologist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, as the new President-Elect of the physicians' organization. Following a year-long term as President-Elect, Dr. McAneny will assume the office of AMA President in June 2018.

“It is a deep honor and privilege to be elected a leader of an organization that is committed to serving as a strong physician voice and a dedicated patient advocate,” said Dr. McAneny. “The AMA will play a pivotal role in the changing health-care environment as our nation confronts pressing health-care issues. With vision and perseverance, I look forward to creating a brighter future for patients and the medical profession.”

Dr. McAneny has been an AMA board member since 2010, serving as Board Chair from 2015 to 2016. Prior to her election to the AMA board, Dr. McAneny served on the board for ASCO and was the delegate to the AMA from ASCO.

She has held many leadership roles in medicine, including President of the New Mexico Medical Society, President of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, and President of the New Mexico Chapter of the American College of Physicians. She served as Chair of the AMA Council of Medical Service from 2009 to 2010.

Dr. McAneny is an actively practicing physician, businesswoman, and Co-Founder and CEO of a multidisciplinary oncology practice, New Mexico Oncology Hematology Consultants Ltd. She also built and manages the New Mexico Cancer Center, which provides comprehensive outpatient medical and radiation oncology care and imaging at several underserved rural areas across New Mexico, including sites in Albuquerque and Gallup.

Dr. McAneny has received the New Mexico Woman on the Move Award in 2005 and Woman of Influence Award in 2009, and has been voted multiple times by her peers as Albuquerque The Magazine’s “Top Doc” in her specialty. At the national level, she has established a reputation as an innovator after being awarded a federal grant in 2012 to develop the Community Oncology Medical Home Model that demonstrates improved outcomes and patient satisfaction with reduced hospitalizations and costs.

ASCO Statement on Dr. McAneny's Election

ASCO President Bruce E. Johnson, MD, FASCO, issued the following statement:

“Today, the delegates of the AMA voted for [Dr. McAneny] as the organization's President-Elect, making her the first oncologist elected to serve in this important leadership position. In our national dialogue on access to health care, patients with cancer often highlight the broader challenges facing the entire system. The awareness Dr. McAneny brings, as an oncologist at the helm of the largest physician association, will benefit patients and providers broadly. On behalf of ASCO, I offer my congratulations to my friend and colleague, Dr. McAneny. I am delighted that she has been elected to represent the entire physician community and certain that her broad expertise and insight on today's challenging health-care environment will greatly benefit the practice of medicine and our patients.”

“Through years of dedicated effort, Dr. McAneny has consistently moved medicine forward by innovating new models that promote higher quality cancer care while significantly reducing costs. She has served ASCO with distinction…during her service, she provided critical insights into the challenges facing community oncologists, passionately testified before Congress, and continuously advocated on behalf of oncologists and patients with cancer. I am confident that she will bring this same energy and leadership to the AMA.”
