James C. Wittig, MD

James C. Wittig, MD, has been appointed Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the Morristown Medical Center and Medical Director of Orthopedic Oncology within the Atlantic Health System. Dr. Wittig will be responsible for ensuring quality, academic excellence, and optimal operational performance across the Atlantic Health System’s six hospitals.

Dr. Wittig is internationally recognized for his work in bone and soft-tissue cancers. He is actively involved in clinical research, about which he lectures and publishes -frequently. Dr. Wittig wrote and coedited Techniques in Orthopedic Surgical Oncology, the sole textbook that details surgical procedures in orthopedic oncology.

Professional Experience

Dr. Wittig previously served as Vice Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery, Chief of Orthopedic Oncology & Sarcoma Surgery, and Director of the Skin & Sarcoma Division at the Hackensack University Medical Center. 

Prior to his role at Hackensack University, he served as Chief of Orthopedic Oncology at Mount Sinai Medical Center, as well as practiced at the New York University (NYU) Medical Center and Hospital for Joint Diseases. Dr. Wittig established the first orthopedic oncology clinic for indigent care in New York City at Bellevue Hospital Center. He also established the Sarcoma Service at NYU–Tisch Hospital, where he also served as Director of the Sarcoma Division of the NYU Cancer Institute. ■
