The American Society of Hematology (ASH) announced the election of three new members to its Executive Committee for terms starting after the 2025 ASH Annual Meeting, taking place December 6 to 9 in Orlando, Florida.
Alison Loren, MD, MSCE, will serve a 1-year term as Vice President followed by successive terms as President-Elect and President. Adam Cuker, MD, MS, and Mikkael Sekeres, MD, MS, will serve 4-year terms as Councillors.
“Drs. Loren, Cuker, and Sekeres will help shape the future of hematology at a time when the basic underpinnings of science and medicine are under threat. They are leaders in their respective fields and will bring their unique perspectives and insights to ASH,” said 2025 ASH President, Belinda Avalos, MD. “With their dedication, ASH will continue to fight for the future of hematology and drive meaningful change for patients with blood disorders worldwide.”
Dr. Loren, the incoming Vice President, is Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine and Director of Blood and Marrow Transplantation at the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania. As a clinician, she is deeply committed to improving access to and outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation and long-term survivorship, including fertility preservation and reproductive health in cancer survivors.
She has been a devoted member of ASH, as demonstrated by her nearly 20 years of service to the Society on a range of committees, with particular emphasis on the education and training of hematologists. Dr. Loren has most recently served as a Councillor on ASH’s Executive Committee (2020–2023), Co-Chair of the ASH Annual Meeting Education Program (2021), and as an appointed member of the Hematology-Focused Fellowship Steering Committee (2020). She also served on the Committee on Training (2009–2018), Training Awards Subcommittee (2013–2015), and various award study sections.
“Hematology impacts every aspect of health, and we have a responsibility as hematologists to honor and advocate for all people with blood diseases,” said Dr. Loren. “I look forward to serving the broad hematology community of clinicians and researchers, especially in advancing ASH’s advocacy work and funding for research and career development during times of uncertainty.”
Dr. Cuker, incoming Councillor, is Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Classical Hematology Section, and Director of the Penn Comprehensive Hemophilia and Thrombosis Program at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. His clinical expertise is in clotting, bleeding, and platelet disorders. An ASH member since 2006, Dr. Cuker has served as Chair of ASH’s Committee on Quality since 2022. He also served as faculty of the Clinical Research Training Institute, and Senior Executive Editor of the ASH Self-Assessment Program.
Dr. Sekeres, incoming Councillor, is Chief of the Division of Hematology and Professor of Medicine at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of Miami. His academic focus is on myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in older adults. An ASH member since 2002, Dr. Sekeres is Chair of the Older Adults with AML guidelines. He has previously served as Chair of the Committee on Communications and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of ASH Clinical News.
