Endowment Helps George Washington University Cancer Center to Create Position of Dr. Cyrus Katzen Family Director

The George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center has announced the establishment of the Dr. Cyrus Katzen Family Director of the GW Cancer Center, thanks to a gift from GW alumnus and former Board of Trustee member Jay Katzen, MD.

The gift will support the ongoing growth and expansion of the GW Cancer Center in strategic areas of clinical care, research, and education. Eduardo M. Sotomayor, MD, Director of the GW Cancer Center, will be installed as the inaugural Dr. Cyrus Katzen Family Director at a ceremony later in 2019. The endowment will support basic science and translational research, new treatment protocols, academic needs for medical students and clinicians, honoraria for visiting scholars, pilot research grants for residents and fellows, and equipment needs.

This gift follows a $10 million gift made in 2008 by Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen, which enabled GW to bring the most up-to-date technology and treatment options to patients. It also included an expanded and remodeled Infusion Center.

Dr. Jay Katzen is one of six members of the Katzen family to have attended GW and is one of four family members who earned medical degrees at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences  He practices ophthalmology at The Eye Center in Alexandria, Virginia. ■
