Once again, geriatric oncology will take the forefront at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK). On April 23, 2024, the Division of Advanced Practice Providers and the Geriatric Medicine Service at MSK will host the 3rd annual Geriatric Oncology Symposium for Advanced Practice Providers. The target audience for this full-day, virtual symposium is any health-care provider who cares for older adults with cancer, including physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and interprofessional team members.

Since 2022, the goal of the directors and planning committee for this symposium has been to provide participants with the knowledge they need to care for older adults with cancer. As our global society ages, the number of older adults who are diagnosed with and seeking treatment for cancer will increase. Providers must be skilled in the assessment of the older adult, especially in relation to cancer therapies and their potential biopsychosocial impact. This educational offering seeks to increase the awareness of geriatric oncology principles among providers.

This year, the symposium will highlight the psychosocial aspects of cancer care. The theme is “Delivering Person-Centered Care.” Important topics such as health advocacy, financial toxicity, caregiver support, shared decision-making, and effective communication strategies will be addressed by the dynamic roster of speakers. Dr. Carolyn Clancy, the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Discovery, Education & Affiliate Networks, Veterans Health Administration, will deliver the keynote address. Additionally, this year, with the support of the MSK Patient and Family Advisory Council for Quality, a patient and family caregiver panel will provide attendees with valuable insight into cancer care from these important perspectives.
